ChatGPT vs Gemini is the question I get asked every week. Both cost about $20 a month at the main paid tier, both say they can do everything, and both are among the most popular AI chatbots out there. So which one should you actually pay for?
We ran the same real tasks through both, side by side: writing, research, coding and AI images. Then we looked at the plans and how each one fits into the apps you already use. Here's who won each round, and which one fits the way you work.
What We Compared: GPT-6 vs Gemini 4
On OpenAI's side, ChatGPT runs the GPT-6 family. On Google's side, it's the Gemini family, and Google released a new Gemini 4 model just this month.
The test was simple. Same prompt, same task, both AIs at the same time. For each round I judged what normal people care about: does it sound human, did it follow the instructions, and would I use the result without fixing it first?
ChatGPT Plans vs Gemini Plans
Both companies now sell several tiers:
ChatGPT: Go at about $8 a month, Plus at $20, and Pro tiers above that
Google Gemini: AI Plus at about $5 a month, AI Pro at about $20, and Ultra at the top, well above $100
The main $20 tier costs almost the same on both sides. So price won't decide this. What decides it is the kind of work you do. If you want to see how the newest free option stacks up, read our DeepSeek vs ChatGPT comparison.
Gemini vs ChatGPT for Writing Emails
Round one was everyday writing. I asked both: "Write a friendly email asking my landlord to fix a leaking tap. Keep it under 100 words."
Both wrote a solid, polite email that stayed under the limit. The difference is where you use it. Gemini can work right inside your Gmail, so you can draft and send without copying anything over.
My take: for everyday writing, the two are pretty close. Pick the one whose voice you like, and pay attention to how much filler each one adds, because that shows up in every answer.
Winner: tie.
Gemini vs ChatGPT for Research and Sources
Round two was research. I asked both to research World War I, and I didn't just want an answer. I wanted to open the sources and check that they say what the AI claims.
Gemini is tied directly into Google Search, which is a real advantage for fresh information. ChatGPT's search is strong too. So this round came down to which one gave me sources I could actually verify.
One warning for both: click the citations. Both AIs can still be confidently wrong, so check each step before you rely on it. If research is your main use, our Perplexity AI guide covers another tool built around sources.
Winner: a slight edge to Gemini for fresh information.
Gemini vs ChatGPT for Coding and Codex
Round three: build a small working Pac-Man app.
ChatGPT: its top model currently leads on agentic coding, and Codex is a real draw if you code for a living. Anyone on any plan can use Codex.
Gemini: competes closely, is cheaper per token on the API, and built the Pac-Man app almost instantly.
If you just want quick, simple scripts, either one works. If coding is your job, ChatGPT and Codex are the stronger pick.
Winner: ChatGPT.
Gemini vs ChatGPT Image Generation
Round four was AI images. I gave both the same prompt: a dog flying toward Mount Rushmore. Text inside images is where models usually stumble, so that's a good stress test.
Gemini was much faster, and Mount Rushmore looked accurate and high quality. ChatGPT took noticeably longer, but the finished picture looked better.
Winner: your pick, but I'd still go with ChatGPT.
Google Workspace vs Custom GPTs: Which Fits Your Apps?
This is the round that decides it for a lot of people.
Gemini: if your life runs on Gmail, Docs, Drive and Calendar, Gemini plugs in natively. Google AI Pro also bundles extra storage.
ChatGPT: if you want a standalone assistant with lots of third-party apps, custom GPTs and agent features, ChatGPT is the deeper workbench.
